Solo Leveling Anime Review – Epic Battles, Powerful Characters, and the Rise of Sung Jin-Woo
Introduction
Welcome back to Mind in Motion.
Today, we’re going to explore one of the most popular action anime of recent years — Solo Leveling. If you’ve been following my blogs, you might know that I usually don’t review this type of anime, and I agree with you if you think this is outside my usual style. But when I read its manhwa, I noticed some surprisingly good life lessons that I’d like to share with you, even though the story doesn’t focus heavily on them.
I’m not the biggest fan of shounen anime, but if you enjoy this genre, you might want to take my criticisms with a grain of salt. Now, let’s begin.
Recommendation
If you’re a fan of action-packed anime, power fantasy narratives, visually appealing animation, and intense hype moments, then you will definitely enjoy Solo Leveling.
About This Anime
Solo Leveling is based on the South Korean web novel written by Chugong, which quickly became a cultural phenomenon in Korea and around the world. Originally serialized in 2016 on the online platform KakaoPage, it was later adapted into a hugely popular webtoon illustrated by Jang Sung-rak (also known as Dubu) from Redice Studio.
The anime adaptation is produced by A-1 Pictures, a Japanese animation studio known for delivering visually stunning and emotionally engaging series such as Sword Art Online, Your Lie in April, and Kaguya-sama: Love Is War. The anime premiered in January 2024, bringing the intense, game-like world of the novel to life with fluid action sequences and a captivating soundtrack.
While Solo Leveling is relatively new in anime form, its source material has received widespread acclaim, ranking high on webtoon popularity charts and winning multiple awards, including recognition at the Korean Content Awards. Its global fanbase praises it for its unique protagonist development, breathtaking fight choreography, and the way it reinvents the “weak-to-strong” storytelling formula.
Important Characters
- Sung Jin-Woo – The protagonist who starts as the weakest hunter in the world but gains mysterious powers that allow him to level up infinitely. His transformation from frail to unstoppable is the core of the story.
- Cha Hae-In – An S-Rank hunter known for her extraordinary sword skills and unique sensitivity to mana. She plays a significant role in Jin-Woo’s journey later in the story.
- Yoo Jin-Ho – Jin-Woo’s loyal friend and hunting partner. His comedic yet sincere personality adds warmth to the otherwise dark narrative.
- Go Gun-Hee – The wise and powerful Chairman of the Korean Hunters Association, who recognizes Jin-Woo’s true potential.
- The Monarchs & Rulers – Powerful beings from another realm whose conflict spills into the human world, shaping much of the story’s grand-scale battles.

Story Overview (No Major Spoilers)
About ten years ago, mysterious portals began appearing all over the world. These “gates” connected Earth to dangerous dungeons filled with deadly beasts, against which modern weapons were useless.
To combat these threats, certain people awakened special abilities and became known as Hunters. Their mission was to clear dungeons by defeating the dungeon’s boss within ten days — otherwise, the gate would “break,” releasing monsters into our world.
Many organizations formed to tackle these dangers, recruiting hunters to eliminate dungeon bosses. Inside these dungeons, hunters could also find valuable magic stones, which they would sell to earn a living.
Hunters were ranked by power level: S-Rank being the most powerful, E-Rank the weakest. Some individuals, known as National Level Hunters, were even stronger than S-Ranks.
Our protagonist, Sung Jin-Woo, is an E-Rank hunter — often injured, struggling to make money, and unable to afford good equipment. But one day, during a dungeon raid, a life-changing event occurs that sets him on a path no one could have predicted.
Best Moments for Me (Spoiler Warning)
Here are some of the moments that hyped me the most in Solo Leveling. Some of these come from the manhwa and have not yet been adapted into the anime:
-
Bellion’s Arrival – In the manhwa, when Bellion descends from the sky with his massive army, all S-Rank hunters believe they are doomed — only for the army to kneel before Jin-Woo and call him “Master.” The scene’s impact in the panels is unforgettable.
-
Jin-Woo vs. Ant King Beru – In the anime, it’s great, but in the manhwa it’s next-level excitement. The entire world is watching the fight, S-Rank hunters are on the brink of despair, and then Jin-Woo appears out of thin air for an insane battle.
-
First Dungeon Raid – Featured in the first two anime episodes, this raid delivers incredible suspense. It’s one of the few times the series balances intelligence, tension, and the darker sides of human nature — not just raw strength.
Conclusion
While there are aspects of Solo Leveling I didn’t enjoy, its main goal is to hype up the audience — and it succeeds spectacularly for most viewers.
If you decide to check it out, I personally recommend reading the manhwa. It gives more attention to side characters and is already complete, so you won’t have to wait for future seasons. That said, the anime’s animation quality and soundtrack do an excellent job of bringing the action to life.
Have you watched Solo Leveling yet? If yes, what did you like or dislike about it? Share your thoughts in the comments! And if there’s an anime you’d like me to review next, feel free to request it — I might just cover it in a future blog.
That’s all for today. See you next Monday, and until then, keep your Mind in Motion.
